The late, great Steve Jobs was known for the above line when he was about to introduce a new product or service. So it is, with what, I consider to be his greatest IDEA that has received no fanfare or media attention that needs to receive more attention. He laid out a "one more thing..." moment in his biography that has started to transform my personal life. It has been hard for me to do it, but I am trying, and am going to use it for my family's life's as well.
Speaking to Rubert Murdoch, Jobs said:
"You're blowing it with Fox News," Jobs told Rupert Murdoch over dinner. "The axis today is not liberal and conservative, the axis is constructive-destructive, and you've cast your lot with the destructive people. Fox has become an incredibly destructive force in our society. You can be better, and this is going to be your legacy if you're not careful."
I am a teacher (high school chemistry/physics) and there is a saying in the teaching world for something like the above quote: POWERFUL.
This quote relates to everything in life: how you treat people, how people should treat you, how you conduct business, how you drive your car; whatever. We should all be constructive and not destructive.
And what really made me pause and think after I heard this quote was how I teach and treat my students. Like I said, I am a high school teacher and realized that I wasn't treating my student's like the teenagers that they are, but just "things" in front of me that I taught chemistry and physics to. I have a much more patient attitude toward them and am a different teacher now because of that one quote from "some dead white guy" (as I teacher my students about most of the people in the textbooks that we use).
So, thank you Steve Jobs for helping me, eventually make my life better and, hopefully, making the life's around me better.
(Now, if only my credit card companies and mortgage company would do the same thing and lower my interest rate and/or monthly payments because I am not able to make my payments and it is very destructive.)
